When you go on a mission, you are devoting your life to service.  However, the Lord has not called us to serve for only two years of our lives.  Followers of Christ are commanded in scripture in consecrate our time, energies and talents to his work.  Even if a young women doesn’t go on an official “mission”, your life can and will be filled with opportunities to serve.  Your entire life should be a mission for the Lord.  What better way to prepare than starting now??  Additionally, can young women start today? Yes!  Elder M. Russell Ballard said:

“In your morning prayer each new day, ask Heavenly Father to guide you to recognize an opportunity to serve one of His precious children. Then go  throughout the day with your heart full of faith and love, looking for someone to help. Stay focused, just like the honeybees focus on the flowers from which to gather nectar and pollen. If you do this, your spiritual sensitivities will be enlarged and you will discover opportunities to serve that you never before  realized were possible.”
-M. Russell Ballard (Be Anxiously Engaged, Oct. 2012)
I love how he mentions honeybees. Honeybees only produce one-twelfth of a  teaspoon of honey in their entire lifetime. Elder Ballard says:
“Though seemingly insignificant when compared to the total, each bee’s  one-twelfth of a teaspoon of honey is vital to the life of the hive. The bees  depend on each other.”
Each of us is like a honeybee. Even though we only contribute a little, all willing servants of God help and depend on each other. If we constantly pray and look for opportunities to serve, we will be so blessed.  The Lord will place people and circumstances in your way that are perfectly situated for your needs, strengths and abilities.  He will use you as an instrument for greater things than you ever imagined, even when you are young, if you are willing!!  The Lord has work for everyone and you don’t have to wait until you are an adult to start. Elder Ballard said:
“At the end of each day, may we be able to say yes to the questions: “Have I  done any good in the world today? Have I helped anyone in need?” (Hymns, no. 223). This is God’s work. May we be about it as faithfully as the dedicated little honeybees go about theirs, I humbly pray in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.”
